Quick Pros
- Great nebula/space/etc effects
- Lens flares work properly
- Clock a nice addition
Quick Cons
- Textures on ships/planets low quality
- No anti-aliasing and no rounding; too low polycount; Bumpmapping?
- 2 icons installed on desktop
Extension
As this is a fairly straightforward review, I’ll keep it short. It does look good for sure and is great for a screensaver where you’re probably not normally paying attention to finite detail. I just wish there was advanced settings for quality levels. The textures are low quality; the planets at points look almost pixelated and ships look like they came from a game 15 years ago. Considering bumpmapping, anti-aliasing and rounding techniques have been around for a long time and most rigs can handle it nicely now, I am surprised to see these details not included or at least set as options.
To top it off, it is set in the Display control panel; When two icons get tossed on the desktop trying to sell more and make sure you know its there, it detracts from the product and product line even before you get into it.
Final Verdict
Even though the lack of detail in some aspects are missing, it does offer a nice ambiance while you aren’t using your computer. If you need a screensaver, like the space theme and don’t watch it intently, you’ll be fine with this one for free. $14.95 for it? I don’t think I would and many others probably wouldn’t either. Maybe $4.95 or $7.95, but the lack of detail and attention put into this doesn’t make it worth $14.95. Only reason I would have gotten it was to put it on a computer as a demo, and even then I’d probably resort to something else with greater detail such as a well setup 3dMark in loop mode on Demo.
