News :: 15MR: AVS Capture Wizard v1.4.2.54 (Quick)
Hello all and welcome to another 15-Minute Review! Today’s application is AVS Capture Wizard version 1.4.2.54 by Online Media Technologies—An application designed to capture streaming video from TV tuners, DVS sources, webcams or other ‘live feed’-style sources and convert it into another compression format.
Today’s review will be a quick summary as due to I do not have the means to properly test this application.
As Giveaway of the Day states:
“Transfer video from DV and VHS cams to hard drive and create movie DVDs. Capture video from TV tuners, DVB cards and WEB cameras. Encode video directly to MPEG 4 instead of native hardware uncompressed video format and save free space on your computer.”
Brief Thoughts
While mentioned in the comments section over at Giveaway of the Day that the wizard would not launch; While I had no means to test the application in full since I am away from my webcam, I wanted to see at least if I would have this issue. While the application does take a while to launch while searching for your video sources, it does provide feedback it is doing something in the means of a splash screen, and then does launch to the first step of the wizard. The application appears to launch to me.
The concept behind this application is good; The ability to take a live stream and compress it on the fly. Depending on your codec, I’m sure you will need to have a decently powerful system, but the alternative is recording first and then going through the encoding process after. This would significantly longer to the whole process. Why not do it in one step?
Making the process easy for those who may not have done this before by laying out the steps in a wizard-style format is also a good idea. I wish I could have tested this further to see how this would have done the task.
Verdict
While I can not test the application, the concept and what I’ve seen so far is good. If you have the need for recording video streams and encode them on the fly to save you time and/or hassles of trying to use VirtualDUB or similar to bring this into another format, you might as well give it a try. As with all AVS software, the $29 for a year of all their software or $59 for a lifetime subscription is not a bad deal if you deal with audio or video a good deal and you’d have to look at the whole picture when purchasing this title.
