Hello all and welcome to another 15-Minute Review! Today’s application is Gren Fields Screensaver version 1.4 by Rixane Interactive

A note to those who read this through RSS as well; I will not be here tomorrow and as such I unfortunately will be unable to do a review tomorrow.

Software Description

As Giveaway of the Day states:

“This awesome animated 3D screensaver will take you out to the endless green fields that cover beautiful rolling hills in a distant land where no man has ever set foot. What can be better than absolutely gorgeous views of pristine nature with no signs of human intervention? The purity and freshness are amazing!

Fly over never-ending green plains and enjoy the stunning beauty of the lush green grass, deep blue skies and distant mountains.

Get away from the city with all of its dirt, smell and ugly looks. Breathe in the fresh air and bathe in the warm sun rays! Ear-pleasing music and hypnotizing sounds of nature will help you disconnect from the busy world around you. This masterpiece will bring you the authentic experience of the power of nature.”

Quick Pros

  • Clouds and mountains look amazing
  • Decent-speed framerates

Quick Cons

  • No advanced support such as anti-aliasing or anistropic filtering
  • No variation is grass clumps; They all look the same
  • Visible line between grass and horizon hills
  • Horizon hills are jagged without anti-aliasing
  • No variation of time of day; Sunrise, sunset, etc.

Expansion

As since this is a screensaver, not too much to go into. While the sky and its effects look amazing, somehow the greatness is lost in the grass and the hills. With no advanced features, the top edges of the hills as well as the grass blades look extremely unrealistic. As well, with the grass clumps, there is no variation; They all look the same and spaced almost the same; Not the greatest feel to them. There is also a visible separation line between the hills and the grass; It would have made more sense to have at least the hills match the overall color of the grass upper half rather than a deeper green.

Final Verdict

While it is a nice ambiant screensaver, it’s detail is lacking compared to some of the previous screensavers. While free, it would be great to try out for sure. For $17.95, I couldn’t warrant paying this much for this application as since it has an unfinished or rushed feel to it and couldn’t recommend it to others for that price.
