Greetings to everybody and welcome to another 15-Minute Review! Today’s application is Folder Marker Home version 2.0.0.5 by ArticLine Software – An application to quickly and easily change the icon of folders on your system.

Software Description

As Giveaway of the Day states:

“Folder Marker is your small assistant, an ardent fighter for your convenience and comfort in any kind of computer work. Use Folder Marker to mark your folders. One mouse-click and it becomes clear at once which documents have a high priority, and which of them have a normal or low priority. It is easy to see which operations have been finished completely, which are partly done and which haven’t been started yet.”

Quick Pros

  • Both application and contextual menu for folders for ‘coloring’ folders
  • Very quick and easy to use
  • Ability to change default system folder icon nice
  • ‘Work’ icons could be very handy for helping with projects
  • Ability to add more icons through interface handy
  • Nice there is a ‘Rollback’ feature

Quick Cons

  • When I selected ‘Use selected icon as system’s default folder icon’, it ‘clumped’ my desktop icons
  • Would have been nice having more ‘alternate’ icons
  • Doesn’t ‘paint’ custom Windows icons (My Documents, My Pictures, etc.)

Expansion

Times change; As time moves on, there becomes more and more optimization options. While Windows has had the ability to change the icons for folders for quite some time, it is awkward to do so due to the nature of the interface. With this application, it not only brings you the ability to change folders one at a time, but also you cn both drag-and-drop into the ‘Multiple Folders’ box multiple folders for faster efficiency; As well as being able to change the system-wide default icon. The issue I did have with the latter, is that when I did do this, the application made all of my desktop icons all reset to default position and as such, ‘clumped’ them in the upper-left of my screen.

What is nice about the application, is that you can use both the application, but better yet for day-to-day use of the application, you can simply use the folder contextual right-click menu to change to the most common icons, as well as work-related icons (Priority, project progress, etc.) With this said, the work icons are handy – You can stick an icon on a folder to denote you’re waiting for approval, priority and much more. This could be helpful for someone working on numerous projects, and could ease the need for constantly referring to a task list, but instead just popping into their clients folder. Now if only we could sort by these icons.

Also good about this application is that it does not limit you to using just this application’s icons. You can load your own icons from a variety of source files, making it easy to customize the folders more while still offering the ease of this application for quick changes.

One feature I do like is the rollback feature. Sometimes you just don’t want all the icons colored anymore or something just happens clearing some of the icons or making them act up. You can revert all the icons for a fresh start. Very handy for those worried that this may damage their icons.

One small thing – If you already have a custom icon in place (IE:- My Documents, My Photos and so on,) the application will not ‘color’ them with the system-wide option. It would have been nice if at least the application would have had the ability to ‘tint’ the icons, or had a custom set in place to replace those with each color offering.

h2. Final Verdict I love having an organized computer and I am usually trying to find ways to organize more effectively while increasing productivity. I have always pondered the idea of custom-changing my icons, but the time to do so would be significant because of Windows interface. While free, if you want to be able to manage your folder colors for productivity, or even just wanted to change from the bland yellow color, this is a good pick-up. Even for $19.95, productivity freaks may definitely find this worth the price. There is even Pro and Free versions available too with different features; Free version is lacking a good portion of functionality (No contextual menu and is missing everything except colored folders.)
