Expansion
Upon first launch of this application, you will be greeted by a very simple, clean-looking green interface. The interface is laid out very simply; The four options (Bitrate, Rate, Audio Channel and Output Folder) and a progress bar on the left, and a large drop box on the right. All of the options save the Output Folder are drop-down boxes with a number of selections available for each. To get the application working, you can drag and drop a selection of files onto the drop box or click on the drop box to bring up an Open dialog. Once you’ve done this, the application takes off converting. Unfortunately the application does not process an entire folder dropped on it and with that it does not do sub-directories either.
There is a wide range of input formats accepted, both audio and video. The author’s website shows a list of some of what is supported there, and does cover most of the modern formats as well as a few archaic ones. Most notable one that many may like is the support for FLV files as well as many of the movie formats as well. On the flipside however, this application can only output to MP3 format, and its output options are very limited; There is no option for joint stereo (Possibly is joint stereo and doesn’t feature full stereo); Does not have options for what compression format to use (Or what it uses); does not offer VBR and is limited to MP3 only.
The conversion process is surprisingly quick and painless. It took around a minute to convert 2 audio files and extract 2 video files’ audio. On further testing, the video files are extremely quick (under 15 seconds for 4 minute video), and audio conversion is a bit slower but only marginally so. The audio quality appears to be reasonable as well based on source file and destination settings.
The help file is a bit lacking; It essentially gives you a poor visual version of a tutorial, and really no information on what the settings do. While many people at this point understand the settings, there are still many who do not know bit rate and frequency (rate) mean and should be a bit of a write-up on the settings.
A few last notes; There really could be a few more options and a bit of refining in this application. While the application does possess the capability to convert FLV files, the application really could benefit from some downloading support; As well, it might be good to incorporate some shell-based functionality for the quick running of conversions as well. There was one issue during install as well and that was with the default install path. Most people don’t change the default path of an install and this application defaults to the root of your primary drive, which isn’t a great place to put folders.
Final Verdict
This application is very limited in output formats, functionality and options. With that said, it does seem to do a good job at what it does and very quickly as well. While many power-users will not be happy with this application; In reality this application will cover enough functionality and is easy enough to use for most people’s needs. For free, this is not a bad tool to pick up if you’re in the market; Especially for the video file portion. As for paying $19.95, while there are many on the market that do just as good of a job for free and offer more functionality, this application does boast simplicity and file input selection that could make this a potential purchase – Try the demo before buying to see if it does what you want it to do.
