Expansion
With the sheer popularity of the iPhone right now, it is hard to overlook producing software to help with managing the iPhone in some aspect. This application is one of these; It converts from DVD to iPhone as well as iPod and Apple TV formats.
This application, like Wondershare iPhone Video Converter v3.1.1 I reviewed a short while ago, has a very simple layout and is very easy to get going. You can not only handle DVDs directly, but you can also use the production files you used to make the DVD as well. There is an assortment of options as well, including cropping, trimming of the video, selection of specific chapters and effects to add to the video. This application was very easy to get running for doing what you need.
When I began testing, I tried grabbing one of my older DVDs off my shelf. I tossed it in and when I clicked load, I got quite a few ‘Failed to load IFO (Path to IFO)’ errors. After clicking through those, I got an equal number of ‘Failed to create decoder. This file cannot be decoded.’ errors to click through. When I was done, it atill came up with the video structure, so I chose my video codec settings and went to start the process. At this point I was greeted by a CSS encryption error and that it could not proceed. Without the use of a third-party application (outside the scope of this review), you can not re-encode a video for use on your iPhone or other Apple product. Not that big of an issue. I proceeded to take the DVD out and place in my wedding DVD (Self-produced) and proceeded to try again. This time I received no errors and started ripping happily. One major note here; Unlike Wondershare iPhone Video Converter v3.1.1’s mediocre video conversion this application is a slow conversion process. After running on my DVD for 16 minutes, it still has a remaining time of 2 hours and 45 minutes; A total of 3 hours; For a DVD that is 2:25 long, this is quite a conversion time, considering there is also no encryption on this DVD either. I’ve tried this on two systems now and both post less than 1:1 speeds.
Final Verdict
While this application is easy to use like Wondershare iPhone Video Converter v3.1.1 I really can’t understand why the conversion process is so slow considering that Wondershare iPhone Video Converter v3.1.1 was significantly quicker for raw video. I am running the application on the same system as the last review, using a 16X drive, so I don’t quite understand what the slowdown is. For free, you can give this application a try and see how your conversion speeds look. If it weren’t for being extremely slow, I would likely recommend this application for $29 and toss in an application to help it with your conversion of your DVD collection, but at this point I can not recommend it for purchase with the speed I am experiencing.
There are alternatives to this application; DVD-to-iPhone ($29.95 – Claims 400% recording speed) – Search Google for DVD to iPhone and you will see an army of these types of applications.
